San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman talks poetry with students from Lowell High School
The Foundation for Creative Expression uses the story of the Beat Generation to encourage young people to identify something that is important to them, and to find a way to do it.
We explain how the Beats were not out to 'change the world.' They were simply artistic intellectuals who, in unabashedly pursuing their own passions, and by living authentic lives, did in fact change the world.
The Beats were at the forefront of every major social movement of the 20th Century—from racial equality, gender equality, gay and lesbian liberation, and environmentalism.
Our message to young people is to find a way to do something you love, but also not to be afraid to change that goal when the times comes. Growth demands change, so expect change to occur, and don't be afraid to embrace it.
Outreach Programs
The Beat Museum on Wheels, a project of the Foundation For Creative Expression, was born out of a desire to expand the reach of the Beat Museum by taking the story of the Beats 'On The Road'—directly to the people. We do this with a multimedia show that incorporates video, slides, poetry readings, music and storytelling.
The point of this effort is to encourage people, especially young people, to use their gifts. We want to help keep alive and promulgate a spirit and an attitude that shows young people that one person can make a difference. We want to encourage people who love to sing but are afraid to sing to SING! We want to encourage someone who has an interest in architecture to design and to build. We want to use the story of the Beats to encourage people to pursue their passions.
